Check out Sullivans Island homes and find one of the most affluent of Charleston’s suburbs. The island is known for its lovely beaches, fascinating history, and stunning homes. The southern end of the island is the most historic. It is the location of Fort Moultrie, Stella Maris Church, and the Sullivans Island Lighthouse. Many of Sullivans Island homes here have their own docks, perfect for going boating, crabbing, or fishing. They also have great views of the ocean. Both the northern end of the island and the area around downtown have lots of great homes. You’ll find both meticulously maintained older homes built in classic architectural styles and carefully designed newer construction that blends right in.
Kids on the island attend Sullivan’s Island Elementary School, which is known for its strong academics and warm atmosphere. The school earned the Palmetto Gold Award in 2011 and continues to maintain a very high level of student achievement.
Sullivans Island real estate has a storied past and lots of places to visit. Fort Moultrie was the site of a successful battle against the British in 1776. Fort Sumter was finished in 1860. Today, visitors are welcome to tour the forts and learn about Sullivans Island’s role in US history. Battery Gadsden Cultural Center was once part of the island’s fortifications and is now a cultural hub. Local artists showcase their work at the center, and community events are held there as well.
The town maintains several parks with playgrounds, picnic areas, tennis courts, and basketball courts. In addition, there are protected spaces that preserve the natural habitat of the island. East Cooper Land Trust is a great place for a nature walk, through the forest and along the beach. Sullivan’s Island Nature Trail is another fun place to walk and learn about local wildlife. And of course, there are more than two miles of sunny beaches. Swim, sunbathe, and play in the sand.
