West Ashley Homes Offer Waterfront Living
Come check out West Ashley homes and discover one of Charleston’s most sought-after communities. The neighborhood is west of downtown Charleston, across the Ashley River. James Island and John Island are West Ashley’s southern neighbors, with the Stono River winding between. The area was developed after World War II, so you’ll find lots of historic bungalows, ranch-style homes, and mid-century modern houses. There are also convenient condos and townhouses, as well as some gorgeous estate-style homes with river frontage. The newer West Ashley real estate fits in nicely with the classic architecture of the area.
When it comes to shopping, West Ashley has lots of the area’s best malls. It is anchored by Belk, Dillard’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Target. There are lots of other, smaller shops selling clothing, shoes, accessories, and home goods. Medical University of South Carolina has its MUSC Health West Medical Pavilion in the mall, where people can see primary care physicians as well as specialists. There’s also a 16-screen movie theatre with IMAX at the mall.
Families with school-aged kids looking at West Ashley will be pleased with many of the public school options, including Ashley River Creative Arts and Montessori Community School. There are quite a number of excellent private schools, too, including Porter-Gaud School. The school is well known for its excellent college prep curriculum.

Outdoor recreation opportunities abound near West Ashley homes. Enjoy walking, jogging, or bicycling near Ashley or Stono Rivers. The West Ashley Greenway is a 10.5-mile long pathway of hard packed dirt, which begins on Folly Road at South Windmere Shopping Center and runs roughly parallel to Highway 17 to Johns Island.
West Ashley residents can learn more about the Charles Towne Colony at Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site. There’s an on-site museum with artifacts and information about the first decades of the colony. Go to the zoo to find out about animal species native to the area. In the spring and fall, visitors can watch as archeologists work to uncover more about the early history of the site.
